Background Information: Hayden was raised in upstate New York by his parents, who met in New York City and then moved out to a rural area. He got his love for studying religions from his father and his swordsmanship from his mother. Hayden applied to college to study ancient languages and world religions. He was particularly fascinated with the concept of predestination; this stemmed from what he learned about his family as an adult. When he was 18, his mother told him about demons and of her family’s connections to the Watchers’ Council (his uncle was a member, though he never trained a slayer). Hayden wanted to join but was refused at the time. He swallowed his disappointment by telling himself it wasn't his path, and tried to make himself feel useful in other ways, to carry on the family tradition of aiding in the fight against demons (i.e. stubbornly studying demonology anyway, digging further into languages and history, learning how to fight).
In the summer of 2008, he was studying a coven in Colorado when their magic detected a mysterious energy source in the Nevada desert. Hayden volunteered to investigate and wound up in Searchlight, Nevada, an old mining town. That's where he met Kris Michaels, a slayer who became his girlfriend. Kris was without a watcher and beyond needing one to teach her how to fight. But Hayden's determination to help her, to prove himself, and to figure out the mysterious situation in the mines made him an integral part of white hat efforts in Nevada. It also made him a target. Elfleda, the Bride of Leviathan, tried to keep him as far away from the mines as possible. Because of his contributions in Searchlight, and the complete lack of employable Watchers, the Council brought him on in 2010.
His research, which bordered on neurotic, led him to discover the Exile, a powerful entity trapped in a dimensional rift beneath Searchlight. What should've been a 'eureka' moment went sour fast, when Hayden's requests for assistance from the Council (and even some of the white hats in Nevada) fell on deaf ears. Things got worse; Kris was forced to move back to Chicago, and the Exile began to manipulate his behavior through black-outs in an effort to scare him off. In October 2010, the stress of his research, fear over not being in control of himself, and his regret over losing Kris convinced Hayden to leave Searchlight, and his research, behind.
In July of 2013, Hayden's not the same guy he was in Searchlight. Without the two great loves of his life -- purpose and Kris -- he's become quiet and reclusive. He works in construction in Chicago, hasn't hunted a vampire since he left Searchlight, and keeps his books for reference only. When someone calls for information about a demon, he'll hand over the right books, but otherwise he's hands-off.
